Working after graduation: 12 months of OPT, plus 24 for STEM
After finishing the degree an F-1 student can apply for post-completion OPT, up to 12 months, in work related to the major; if the degree's CIP code is on the DHS STEM list and the employer uses E-Verify, a further 24-month extension is available.
Two windows apply: Form I-765 must be filed within 30 days of the DSO entering the recommendation in SEVIS, and no earlier than 90 days before completing the degree or later than 60 days after, and work cannot start until the EAD is issued. Unemployment is capped at 90 aggregate days during post-completion OPT, or 150 days across the whole period with a STEM extension. If the STEM extension is filed on time and the current OPT expires while it is pending, employment authorisation is automatically extended for 180 days.
Do I need a job offer to apply for OPT?
No. You do not need an employer to file Form I-765. Once it is approved the unemployment clock starts: 90 days maximum during post-completion OPT, or 150 across the whole period with a STEM extension.
Does my degree count as STEM?
It depends on whether the degree's CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, not on how technical the programme's name sounds. The CIP code is printed on the I-20.
